FAQs
Q: Can I get my sod first thing in the morning?
A: When your sod is delivered depends on your location, weather and the number of deliveries we have that day. Morning deliveries start at 7 am and are finished by 11 am. If you call the day of your delivery, we can tell you the approximate time your sod will be delivered.
Q: How soon after sod is delivered should I install it?
A: Sod should be installed within 24 hours.
Q: How do I calculate how much sod I will need?
A: Use the formula that fits the shape of your lawn*, for example:
- To find the area of a square or rectangle, multiply length times width.
Area of a rectangle =(L*W)
- To find the area of a triangle, multiply the two longest sides together, and then divide by 2.
(Area of a triangle=B*H/2)
- To find the area of a circle, take the radius (half the distance across the middle of the circle) and square it (multiply it by itself), then take that number and multiply it by Pi (3.14)
(Area of a circle=Pi * r2)
*Hint: Add about 10% extra to be sure you have enough sod for cuts and corners!
Q: What if my lawn is an odd shape?
A: To find the area of an odd shape, roughly divide the area into familiar shapes--circles, rectangles or triangles.
Hint: Try to square off any curves. You don't have to be exact as long as you add a margin for error to be sure you have enough sod to cover your yard!
Q: What causes brown spots and how do I fix them?
A: Brown spots in lawns are the cause of concern to homeowners and professional turf managers alike.
Generally, almost every brown spot is the result of one of the following:
- Improper watering
- Chemical or urine burn, or
- Disease
Q: How do I figure out how many cubic yards of soil amendments I need to cover an area?
A: You should spread about 1 cubic yard of soil amendments on every 500 square feet you are laying sod on. You also can choose to add our entire kit onto your order, and the correct amount of soil amendments will be calculated automatically!
If you are trying to raise the level of an area, determine the depth in inches the area needs to be raised.
Take depth in inches and divide by 12. Multiply by square footage of the area. Divide by 27.
Example: Raise level of yard by 2 inches on a 500 square foot area.
2 inches divided by 12 = .17
500 sq. ft. x .17 = 85 85 divided by 27 = 3.15 cubic yards of soil amendment. You may need to add topsoil if you are planning on raising the area up over 4 inches.
Q: How do I perform a sprinkler test?
A: Place equal sized paper cups around the area and let the system run for 20 minutes. Then measure the water that is in each container. This will show you two things: One, are you getting an equal distribution of water in the area? If not, make the necessary adjustments to your sprinkler or sprinkler heads and test again. And two, how much water gets sprayed in twenty minutes? For example, if you have accumulated 1 inch of water in each container in 20 minutes, then you are spraying 3 inches of water per hour.
